Susan Lister Locke

Susan Lister Locke is an artist and goldsmith living on Nantucket Island. Most noted for her rings, and working primarily in 18 karat gold, she uses "The Lost Wax" method where sculpting and carving let the image "discover itself" from the medium. She recently added earrings and bracelets, beads and pendants to her collection.

"While I may start with an idea, a specific image, it is through the process itself that shape and form takes on a life of its own, often surpising me…. As if what emerges as a finished design was there all the time, with it's own energy." She says of the discovery process which gives her method its unique excitement. It is that energy which comes through in each of her pieces.

After many years in the fashion and specialty store business, both on and off Nantucket, Ms. Locke made the move to the Island full time in 1991. It was also a move back to the arts. Previously she had studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the Decordova Museum school. She studied jewelry making with a local artisan and what started as something to help that first winter go by, ended up a full time passion. In addition to working with private teachers in the U.S. and Italy, she has studied at The Artist's Association of Nantucket, the Interlaken School, Metalwerx and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

Her work has been exhibited and sold at S.J. Patten Jeweler, the Gallery at Four India Street, The Artful Image Gallery in Concord, Massachusetts, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Dimson-Homma, NYC.

Her work is currently available on Nantucket at The Artist's Association of Nantucket, The Nantucket Looms, her own studio, and on Cape Cod in Osterville at Oak & Ivory.
